Surface Ink Blending a Sunset Background

Surface Ink Blending a Sunset Background

Hey everyone! Thanks for stopping by the B|M Inspiration Team Blog.  Daniel West, here with a Surface Ink blended background and the peeps from the Stamp of the Month Club from February 2019.

This week, on the Brutus Monroe Facebook Page, we did a live video of ink blending to create a sunset background using Plum, Jack-O-Lantern and Zest Surface Inks.  I used some Life-Changing Blending Brushes from Picket Fence and it seemed like everyone loved the effect!  You can catch the video below.

I created an A2 sized panel out of some Bristol Smooth cardstock for the ink blending. This smooth finish cardstock is ideal for ink blending because the inks take a few moments to sink into the paper due to its tight finish. The inks kind of float on top of the paper and this allows the blending brushes to move it around momentarily before drying.

I masked off the bottom third of the panel and brushed the Plum Surface Ink over it to darken it up and create a horizon.  Then I moved the mask to the other side and using a circular motion, I created a sunset with Zest Ink, then Jack-O-Lantern, then Plum.

I ended up die-cutting the center of the sunset out with a round die to the horizon and replacing it with white cardstock, because I stamped my peeps images to close together.  I decided to stamp the images onto some cardstock and cut them out with my Brother Scan N Cut. Then I inked them up with Raven Detail Ink and\ popped them up in front of the son with tiny foam tape squares.

With a tombow detailing pen, I drew in some grass and tulips. Then I added a shadow for the scene with a dark gray alcohol marker. I drew in some silhouetted clouds with a black alcohol marker, too. Finally, I stamped a sentiment from the Conservatory of Quotes Stamps Set using B|M Clear Embossing Ink and Alabaster Embossing Powder.

I trimmed an 1/8” off the the panel and adhered it onto an A2 sized cardbase.

I’ve tried blendning purples into orange because I love how they sit together (I especially love them in pours hence trying in inks) and I can tell you I know it’s never just simple to do. Well done sir! You’ve a great imagination I’d never in a million years have thought to silhouette a set of buns (snicker) love this.
